Striking The "Mother Lode" Of Silver

Hell no… don't reel in - just put your rod underneath -
we've got a double on so let's go for a hat trick. 

Keep a big bow in that rod - stop -
no sense reeling- he's sideplaning
and screamin' with the current.
We'll get him back.
One of you on each side of the boat.
Unlike netting a king,
this net job here calls for a little
"thunder and lightening"
on my part!

He's in the bag. I unsnap the leader, you snap on an extra
and you're fishing again. Net job no. 2 is brewing in the
storm clouds. More thunder and lightening and
we've got our "hat-trick" skyrocketing back there
sixty feet behind the boat.
I'm  busy  &  likin'   this  a  lot!

Let's spool em' up and hit the face of
this incoming tide. If we get in them…
it'll likely be a short bite until the
water is too slow.

This Kenai lowland herd has some
monsters - world record class.
They swim damn good but it's
hard to get them to bite.

Like wildcatters sometimes drilling for oil, we've hit a "dry hole" here.
Lets run back up the river, take a shore break and you can get ready
for whatever happens next.

Watch below us there. As riffles begin to appear over that gravel bar,
Tighten up your shoe laces and watchband.
Now is the time !

Mid-day & bright sun… a visable silvery flash slashes through the
glacial blue-green water or a dorsal fin appears right below where
your line hits the water. A pea-gravel bottom is only thirty-six inches down
and white spray erupts as this guy pulls the "coho tricks"
out of his bag. This is no TV leap like you've seen salmon do at the waterfalls.
This isn't a leap,  it's a  "case of the somersaults".

Whichever way he was going…
he's not now!
He will amaze you but he's not
done. The next step in this process
will impress you. When his whole bag
of tricks is empty, then like with kings,
your work begins. Second verse…
just like with kings… lift up… reel down…
over and over and over.
Repeat if necessary.

He is twelve pounds…
how can he do this.
Simply amazing!
But chances are, in the fish box,
he to will become a statistic. Oh  &*@# !
Yep, every now and then just at the
last minute that damn hook just pulls out.

I'll teach you a trick though that will help.

Everybody else reel in… stow your rods in the tackle tray.

We'll have to do some "Silver-King Fishing" here for a while. This big buck about has us spooled. Stand here by the "electric chair"… we'll drift with him just like kings… almost. After the initial fireworks, drifting with and netting kings is like drinking a cup of coffee. Each act is a mirror image of its predecessor. Drifting with a silver, no precedence has ever been set. Around, above, below, under, and even in the boat, these guys don't know or play by the rules… and THEY BREAK THE SPEED LIMIT. If silvers were as big as kings or
if kings swam like silvers, the "gallows of fame" at picture taking time
would have a lot less hang-ups.

We're still drifting and he's still silvering!
And doing one hell of a job at it
but his leash is getting shorter and shorter.
My knees, like Jim's, are knocking a little
as I slide the net under this one.
He is a slab-sided giant! At the tackle shop,
official weigh station, he tipped the scale at
twenty-one pounds six ounces. Don't expect to,
but I wouldn't be surprised if you caught an
eighteen-pound silver. Late at night
in the bars you can often hear about the
hundred-pound king that Fish and Game
tagged  or the twenty-four pound silver
old Joe's neighbor caught. But…
in the morning, "back in the real world"
they're about as scarce as
"rockin' horse" shit !
